An
important part of regaining or maintaining health is reducing stress
on the immune system. No one would seriously consider going out
in cold weather inappropriately dressed, and we all know the value
of vitamin C in preventing and recovering from colds. The main
stress to our immune system, however, comes from the very air we
breathe.
Every
time we take a breath we are pulling pollutants, allergens, and
bacteria into the respiratory system. Our body has many natural
defenses, including mucous and the hairs lining our nose. However,
it is very easy for our bodies to be overwhelmed by the sheer amount
of debris in our atmosphere. This is especially true for those already
suffering from diseases or other conditions. This is why we recommend
nasal irrigation a 5,000 year-old ayurvedic method of cleansing
the nasal cavities.
Nasal
irrigation is perfectly safe, very easy to do, and causes
no discomfort. It has been recommended by doctors in this country
for over 100 years and is well supported by medical literature.
It has been shown effective in reducing occurrence of colds &
flu, reducing allergies, and reducing sinus infections.
Nasal
irrigation works by flushing the nasal passages with a gentle salt
water solution. This removes pollutants, allergens, bacteria,
excess mucous, and other debris. Without nasal irrigation, these
would require a lot of the bodys energy to remove, especially
if they reach the lungs or inner ears. By performing nasal irrigation,
the body in general, and the immune system in particular, are freed
up to concentrate all their energies on more critical health conditions,
including disease prevention.
Special
note for those undergoing chemo or other radiation therapies, HIV/AIDS,
and other immuno-sensitive patients: When performing nasal irrigation
you should use sterilized water, either boiled tap water or bottled
water. It is very important to make sure that the water is warm
but not hot in order to prevent risk of damaging the nasal tissues.
For people with healthy immune systems, using sterilized water is
usually not necessary.
